Do You Need to Be a Provisional Taxpayer?

Do You Need to Be a Provisional Taxpayer if You Only Earn Interest?

Hello lovely clients! It’s TaxEy, your Tax Fairy, here to clear up a common tax confusion that often catches people by surprise.

Many retirees or investors come to us saying:

“I don’t have a salary or business – I just earn interest. Do I still need to worry about provisional tax?”

The short answer is: Yes, you might!

Who needs to be a Provisional Taxpayer?

SARS says you must register as a provisional taxpayer if you earn income other than a salary (for example: interest, rental, freelance, foreign income, etc.).

But there’s one big exception:
If your “other income” is R30,000 or less per year, you are not required to register.

The Common Trap: High Interest Earners

Let’s imagine you’re 65 or older and earning R200,000 in interest from your savings and investments.

Here’s how SARS sees it:

  • Your rebates (because you’re over 65) and the interest exemption (R34,500 for over 65s) might mean you owe no actual tax.
  • BUT because your “other income” (interest) is more than R30,000, SARS still requires you to be a provisional taxpayer.

So, even if your tax bill is R0, you must still:

  • Submit two provisional returns (IRP6) each year.
  • File your annual tax return (ITR12).

Why does this matter?

If you don’t file your provisional returns, SARS can hit you with:

  • Penalties for non-compliance 💸
  • Interest charges if they think you’ve underpaid
  • Unnecessary stress that could’ve been avoided!

The Fairy’s Sparkly Advice

  1. If your interest or other income exceeds R30,000 per year, you need to be registered for provisional tax.
  2. Filing may still show a R0 balance due, but it keeps you 100% compliant.
  3. Always let a professional (or your favourite Tax Fairy) review your situation to make sure you’re not paying more than you should.

Remember: Just because you don’t owe tax doesn’t mean you don’t have to file.
